Mark Kellogg enjoys the dual appointment of Principal Trombone of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Associate Professor of Trombone, Euphonium, and Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music. Throughout his career, he has embraced a wide variety of performing roles, from jazz soloist to chamber musician to orchestral performer.
Mark Kellogg received his Bachelor of Music and Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied trombone with John Marcellus and euphonium with Cherry Beauregard. Before joining the RPO in 1989, he performed with the San Francisco Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra, and the Syracuse Symphony. He has been featured soloist with the RPO on many occasions, performing the concerti of Albrechtsberger and Tomasi, Elliot Carter's Remembrance for Trombone and Orchestra and numerous jazz and euphonium solos on the orchestra's Pops series. In honor of the RPO's 80 th anniversary, the orchestra commissioned Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra by Jeff Tyzik for Mr. Kellogg, which was premiered in April 2003.
As a chamber music collaborator, Mark Kellogg has been a founding member of the brass sextet Plus One and the brass and percussion ensemble Rhythm and Brass . He has also been a guest with Music of the Baroque in Chicago, San Francisco's Chamber Music West, Rochester's Fortissimo! Festival, and Society for Chamber Music. Mr. Kellogg can often be heard in recital with his RPO colleague, pianist Joseph Werner. Together, they have performed at music schools and universities across the United States. His latest jazz recording, a collaboration with Eastman faculty pianist Tony Caramia, is titled "Upstate Standards" and features the music of Harold Arlen, Jimmy Van Heusen and Alec Wilder.
Originally from Hannibal, N.Y., Mark Kellogg lives in Rochester, N.Y., with his wife, RPO flutist Joanna Bassett and their young son, Robbie.
