Syracuse’s Salt City Jazz Collective is a 16-piece big band with solid traditional roots.  The Jazz Collective has earned recognition by boldly delivering the historical compositions of its genre’s greatest icons including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey.  Additionally, the band has established its own unique sound by performing original compositions written by band members Joe Riposo and Angelo Candela.

The Salt City Jazz Collective performs regularly at the Syracuse Suds Factory in Armory Square.  The Collective has performed in concert at the Syracuse Jazz Fest and at other concert venues.  The Jazz Collective recently released a live CD, Salt City Live, featuring vocalist Tami Shutt, along with and the Jazz Collective’s outstanding soloists.

 

Joe Colombo

Joe Colombo leads the Salt City Jazz Collective. He holds a Master’s of Science degree from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from State University of New York College at Fredonia. He is the Upper and Middle School band director at Manlius Pebble Hill School. As a professional trombonist, he also performs with the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, Moss Big Band, Stan Colela Orchestra, All That Jazz, Bones East and other groups in the Syracuse area. He was a member of the 26th Army Band, Brooklyn, New York in the early 1980’s. Colombo also currently serves as Director of Scholastic Programs for the Central New York Jazz Arts Foundation.
