Terrence L. Olivo has been a public school educator for thirty-eight years, over thirty years of which have been as a Central Office Administrator. With a Bachelors degree from Marist College and a Masters degree and CAS in Public School Administration from SUNY New Paltz, Mr. Olivo began his career in the Highland Central School District in Ulster County as a history teacher. Rising through the ranks, he left Highland in January of 1979 to become the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel in the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District in Orange County. Ten years later he became the district’s Superintendent of Schools and held that position until his retirement in August of 2004. He currently serves the Mid-Hudson School Study Council as Director Of Research and serves the Orange County Regional Medical Center as a member of both the Medical Center’s Institutional Review Board and Bio-Ethics Committee.
During his 15-year tenure as Monroe-Woodbury’s Supt. Of Schools, the district experienced explosive growth in its student population requiring the addition of over 500,000 square feet of instructional space, including a 400,000 square foot High School and a complete reorganization of the district and its 7,000 students. During this time, student scores consistently remained among the highest in the Mid-Hudson area and the district was cited by NYSSMA in 2001 as having the #1 music program in New York State.
Mr. Olivo was named by the Times Herald-Record as among the Thirty Most Influential People in the Mid-Hudson area in both 2003 and 2004. While technically retired, Mr. Olivo remains active in public education through the Mid-Hudson School Study Council as a frequent speaker and panel member in a variety of workshops and conferences for administrators, teachers and school board members. He resides in Central Valley with his wife Elizabeth, a music teacher in the Goshen Central School District, and is the father of two children.
Terrence L. Olivo will offer reflections on the current climate of public schools and music education.
